There are quite some issues with the video..
Small cores are 1.4 GHz not 1.6GHz.. start of GIMP is really slow.. on my OGST image its started in less than 10 seconds and that is even from a standard HDD not even a fast eMMC.
Also you can see the cursor blinking all the time while gimp is loading on the Ubuntu MATE image.
It's probably an un-polished Kernel 4.14 image without the correct armsoc driver/settings they are using :(
I think HK should really work on improving their images.. the out of the box experience is not very good for beginners :(
The WebGL test in the video not very good to show "graphics performance" there are better ways to do that.. for example glmark2-es2 or other benchmark..
Although fishgl.com works on my side its terribly slow, and it's so on the Tinkerboard as well.. that should show it's not really optimized in any way (not a surprise considering it's optimized for Microsoft Endge only).
There are other WebGL benchmark that would have been better to show differences.
At least have them compare something like 30~60 FPS rather than 8 vs 12 FPS that's not really showing anything. (for example: https://webglsamples.org/aquarium/aquarium.html)

He might use an old 4.9 image. His Chromium doesn't use an EGL acceleration.
Our new 4.14 image has a proper configuration.

Let's also check whether the little cores can be overclocked at 1.6Ghz is stable enough for all XU4 boards or not.

Understandable, I'll be maintaining a 4.9 branch until my 4.14 bug gets resolved.

Can you do an upgrade from 3.10 to 4.14? I see notes on upgrading from 4.9 but not the earlier Kernel. Or do I need to upgrade to 4.9 then up to 4.14.

Hi All,

I have upgraded a few HC-1s to 4.14.3-8 Beko. Just wondering if the kernel performance is expected to be the same.

Particularly if the performance counters - "EXYNOS5420 PMU initialized" will cost some CPU cycles.
well done but, it depends on some creteria

See if this helps: https://trac.ffmpeg.org/wiki/Capture/Desktop. For encoder use h264, not libx264.

Hi @all:
are there any news on the vsync issues with Kernel 4.14?
I tried to start my apps with FORCE_VSYNC=1 but that didn`t help..

I just wanted to ask if there are any plans to have this "kernel crash if (big) USB disk is attached" solved!?

I ran into the same problem. I don't know if this happens only with big USB drives.
Today I double checked with both (latest) Mate/Minimal and kernel 4.14-5 and 4.14-9. The issue still exists.
Both Mate and Minimal are working fine with kernel 4.9 and same USB-disk.

For my use case (NAS, Samba and Cloud application) this is a deal breaker for kernel 4.14 for sure. ;)

@devos,
No, new DRM driver has no feature to force the VSYNC.

@Deje,
Do you know which chipset exist in your USB driver?
Is it UAS compatible?

It is an Orico HDD Dock (Genesys Logic, Inc. hub, 05e3:0616), inside an ASM 1153E chipset. It is UASP1 compatible I think.
Hope that helps.

As said, with kernel 4.9 all is fine, no issues at all. I even have rootfs on the attached 4 TB WD green.

PS: If you have something to test I can do. I do have some spare SD cards available.

I updated to: ubuntu-16.04.3-4.14-mate-odroid-xu4-20171212.img.xz using XU4, an sd card and flashing with etcher. After login I get a blank screen. Prior to login everything looks ok: blue led flashing and red led on, screen ok. It doen't matter if I login with GUEST or ODROID, same result. The leds are ok after login just that the screen is blank.
Any suggestions?

Check the md5sum value.

Code: Select all

a7b04dc27f3ae6dc5f547ef6f14f742d ubuntu-16.04.3-4.14-mate-odroid-xu4-20171212.img.xz
Does your monitor has 1920x1080 native resolution?
Did you wait 30~50 seconds to complete the auto rootfs resizing in the first boot?

Yes, we are still adding some new features in Kernel 3.10.
https://github.com/hardkernel/linux/com ... xu3-3.10.y
But, we may stop supporting it a few months later since very few people use it these days.

BTW, did you have any chance to try your lightning config with 4.14.12?
When I tried it, it looked fine.

Please Please Please

I've landed directly on the page for 4.9
https://wiki.odroid.com/odroid-xu4/os_i ... 9/20170824

There was no warning message.

Now I have found this thread that there is 4.12
https://wiki.odroid.com/odroid-xu4/os_i ... 4/20171212

I have seen this message after the fact I clicked yes:
When you install “linux-image-xu3” package, you will meet a dialog box and you have to choose “No” to proceed the Kernel update.

I am coming from UX side, please make it RED and BEFORE the steps.

Any ideas how badly I screwed up?
I am not shutting it down for now, and I am trying to actually make the whole "Linux Kernel build" for 4.9. In a hope that when it is finished, it makes the things that i deleted.

Any ideas how to fix it if it won't help?

Actually, you can run sudo apt-get install linux-image-xu3 and it will ask you again. The warning is standard in ubuntu - no way to easily change colors.

just recognized that 4.14.18 is available for XU4...

Can anybody please tell me, where to find a changelog for the XU4 kernel releases? Of course, I don't want to miss any security updates or new features, but I also don't want to update my kernel every week (if not necessary). So a changelog would be great... but haven't found one yet.

Thanks for your help!

Another quick question: I notice the wiki instructions for building 4.14 are for a native build only. Is there a particular reason not to cross-compile?

Ah, OK, thanks. Seems to build all right using gcc-5-arm-linux-gnueabihf from Ubuntu 16.04 (gcc 5.4.0) - and probably a bit faster too on a Core i5 :) Are there likely to be any problems with that toolchain?

We will add a cross-build guide on the wiki page for Kernel 4.14.
But the native build seems to generate more optimized code according to our experience.

Well, just doing LANG=C make ARCH=arm CROSS_COMPILE=arm-linux-gnueabihf- was enough it seems. I've made one small config change and the output file size is a few hundred bytes bigger, so doesn't seem like code size is impacted anyway. I'm out of date with compiler tech but wouldn't expect native v. cross to generate different code these days? Were you look at benchmark results, or do you have specific code sections in mind?

We've added the Kernel 4.14 cross-compiling guide.

We were finding inconsistent connectivity with the WiFi Module 5 under the old release. Followed these instructions to upgrade to 4.14 and lost the WiFi driver.

Can you link to instructions to include WiFi driver?

I've checked the latest Kernel 4.14.29 with WiFi module 5 (RTL8812AU).
It works well and I'm writing this post with the WLAN adapter connected.

First of all, thanks for the great work!

After upgrading to 4.14 my eth0 of my XU4 only connects with 100mbit.
If Iam forcing 1000mbit fullduplex and autoneg off with ethtool, eth0 doesnt connect at all.
Can someone help me with this problem?

@Kent446
What is your current kernel version? The latest one must be 4.14.32.
Check "ethtool eth0" outputs too.

@odroid
Ive fresh installed the latest image 20171212.
Eth0 was connected with 1000mbit after first boot.
Then I started "sudo apt update" and "sudo apt upgrade" and again eth0 is only connected with 100mbit.
Then Ive done "sudo apt dist-upgrade" to upgrade to latest kernel and I got this error:
"Errors were encountered while processing:
/var/cache/apt/archives/avahi-dnsconfd_0.6.32~rc+dfsg-1ubuntu2.1_armhf.deb
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)"

Now the whole System UI is somehow broken and kernel version is still 4.14.5-92 :|
