C1(+) LibreELEC 7.0.3 - Kodi Jarvis 16.1 / 24p+HEVC

Unread post by wrxtasy » Thu Sep 10, 2015 10:15 pm

It has been a while, I consider this the best LE 7.0.3 Jarvis I've ever done. :D

LibreELEC-Odroid_C1.arm-7.0.3.OClock.tar

- much improved VC-1 and mpeg4 playback thx. to @peak3d and Amlogic themselves.
- new Lirc and Eventlirc packages for much quick Infra Red remote control response.
- a new Kodi advancedsettings.xml <remotedelay> (default is 1)
- IR remote number Millseconds delay can be tweaked - <remotedelay> </remotedelay>
- CPU Overclocking added to the boot.ini (default is now 1.632GHz)
- configurable - CEC adapter repeats and release. I use - remote button press delay before repeating > 50ms
- annoying CEC popup hidden.
- various Touchscreen modules included.
- Kodi Settings > Video Output tweak and C1 now limited up to 1080p resolutions only.
- Extra LE 7.0 Addons - install this Repo from Thoria and restart Now when signalled
https://github.com/thoradia/thoradia
- MySQL setup now handled inside Kodi settings > Services > MySQL
If using this option make sure you have LibreELEC settings > Network > Wait for Network before Starting Kodi > enabled.
(this may be reverted if causing issues)
- ssh password - le

- Extra Love added, as this was where the OE / LE journey began for me on the C1. I'm still very surprised by the speed of this wee little device for Kodi use !

- LibreELEC 8.0.0 - Kodi Krypton - coming as well soon - I may post that thread over in the LibreELEC C2 Sub-forum where it makes more sense to keep every thing in one place.

W.

=====================================================================================

These OpenELEC releases include the AMLogic / Linux Frame Rate Automation Kernel, that provides perfectly synced 23.976/59.94Hz video output when used in conjunction with this Kodi setting:

System > Settings > Video > Playback > Adjust Display Refresh Rate > On Start/Stop

This allows Kodi to dynamically switch the TV's refresh rate based on the fps of the video content being played.
This is the proper way to run Kodi with this new Kernel, for perfect video sync and to avoid 3:2 pulldown judder when playing 23.976fps movies @ 60Hz.

Other personal tweaks have been added, the aim being to make it more like OpenELEC on the RPi2, but with much desired 1080p 8-bit HEVC playback capabilities added. Thats why I bought a C1 in the first place. ;)

08 Nov '15 - NOTES for EVERYONE
I've actually made it a requirement from this point onwards, to avoid confusion and save everyones time. That a Kodi debug log is posted if anyone is having audio sync or video playback problems. There are too many versions of OpenELEC to deal with and I will not be responding to vague reports of bugs without a supplied Kodi Debug Log and a brief note included about the way the C1 is connected to the TV and AVR and what Hardware is actually used.

No OpenELEC audio sync or video playback problems will be looked at from this point going forward unless a Kodi Debug log is supplied, see the Kodi Wiki for details on simple Debug Log setup instructions:
http://kodi.wiki/view/Log_file/Easy

General OpenELEC and Kodi configuration and usability problems can be posted in the normal manner.

===============================================================

Happy New Year Everybody !

And now another Runnerway & wrxtasy presentation, I like to call the Long Overdue OpenELEC GUI Tearing Fix
I cannot tell you how much this has annoyed me lately on all AMLogic OpenELEC platforms. Now its finally fixed, and damn I'm happy !

Thanks go to WeTek & AMLogic for the new OpenGL video drivers that fixed the Kodi GUI tearing.
Hassling Codesnake did produce results ;)

Runnerway updated the Kernel with new r5p1 merges. I'm nicknaming him Mr. Merge Master !

- It is based on Crashoverride's backporting work found HERE
- This increases the number of USB DVB Tuners supported by OpenELEC, DVB Tuners and their supported device ID's are found in this LIST
- If users issue this lsusb SSH command, you can find the ID numbers of a USB Tuner, eg:

OpenELEC 6.95.5.0 - Kodi Jarvis 16.0 Beta5 02.Jan.16

MyGica T230/August T210v2 DVB-T/T2/C USB Stick support added. (I checked it patched properly this time)
http://www.linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/Geniatech_T230
I've used a different Kernel source as well for this version so other DVB's may work, you can see the DVB Front-Ends supported in this Kernel HERE

I personally use the old, cheap Sony PlayTV DVB-T dual tuner:
http://www.linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/S ... uner_DVB-T

I've also done a bunch of Kernel configuring, removing redundant options for OE and activating some new ones.
29.97fps VC-1 video seems to play smother. Problematic mpeg2 .vob files will now default to ffmpeg Software decoding.

Also of interest is a HDMI CEC On/Off Addon that works on WeTek gear and the C1+

Also added the updated Jarvis compatible HDHomeRun PVR client and other PVR improvements, especially when used with the TvHeadend Server v4.0.7 - see the link below.

Users (Like Me!) running the TvHeadend server and client will love this release. There have been a bunch of PVR upgrades like Series Recording and Intelligent Scheduling and some nice Metadata tweaks for recordings. I also updated pvr.hts, pvr.iptvsimple and pvr.mythtv (more on request).
I also finally fixed a long standing bug with mpeg2 TV Broadcasts where bright red and orange colours would flicker badly. I cannot tell you how much this has annoyed me watching Aussie Rules footy.

EDIT: For users with .tar update problems:
Here is a fixed samba.conf file, this unzipped file needs to go into the ConfigFiles (/storage/.config) directory, then Reboot. This will fix all .tar update issues from this point onwards.

Progress of Kodi Jarvis 16.x can be followed over in RPi section of the Kodi Forums:
Kodi Jarvis Progress HERE

I Strongly Suggest users Backup First before upgrading to Jarvis:
- Kodi > System > OpenELEC > Backup > Create System and Kodi Backup
Also this step needs to be taken to prevent Jarvis Hanging on boot, and then restarting whilst waiting for the Network to connect.
- Kodi > System > OpenELEC > Network > Wait for Network before Starting Kodi > Enable

Just tried your latest OpenELEC 5.95.5.0 - Kodi Isengard 15.2rc1 and frame rate automation does not work anymore. OpenELEC-Odroid-C1.HEVC.15.1-RC1.wrxtasy.img worked very well though.

With the current release I also can not manually switch refresh rates at System -> Video. The Option is greyed out.

I've checked by flashing the v5.95.5 Kodi 15.2rc1 SD image and also checked the .tar to be sure - and have none of the problems you describe.
Frame Rate Automation definitely works as it always has, with the latest release.
Something has probably gone wrong upgrading from a previous version or flashing the SD card.

Regardless if a version is working for you just use that. Its very easy to downgrade and upgrade with the .tar files.

Ok for now I will be using this version: OpenELEC-Odroid-C1-5.95.3.0

I can assure you though that on my end there shouldn't be any errors. I did the following to verify:

1. Flashed 5.95.3.0 to my sdcard.

2. Booted openelec and made sure frame rate automation is working properly. (played a movie and it's working fine on that version)

3. SSHed into my new openelec and downloaded OpenELEC-Odroid-C1-5.95.4.0.tar to /storage/.update

4. reboot.

5. played a movie and refresh rate switching didn't work.

6. verified that frame rate automation is still set to "on start / stop"

7. tried to manually set a refresh rate in System -> System -> Video Output. Refresh rate setting is greyed out and fixed @60hz.

So it actually can not be on my end, can it?

...there is no use in wasting an emmc on openelec, as it runs in RAM completely...only Database-Updates and the like will need to go to "disk".
Get a decent 8GB SD-card and it will last long.

@ schnip, either check your boot.ini file carefully for some sort of text corruption or Reflash v5.95.5 image straight away. Don't do the .tar upgrade.
Stop using old versions - v5.95.5 is the current one. It definitely works on my end.

Also be aware the .tar update file goes into the directory /storage/update/ on the newer versions. Not /storage/.update/

Can anybody confirm that hdmi-cec doesn't work after switching to TV mode (TV button on remote) and then back to Odroid (AV button on remote)? Or I'm the lucky one? :D
@wrxtasy Is it possible somehow to compile torrent client (not web interfaces that available as plugins) for this openelec distribution?

No idea about torrent clients.

Your best bet is to run the C1 - Ubuntu 14.04 image, and see what is available in Linux land. OpenELEC is actually a very closed lean and mean Linux system that is not very configurable at all.

I have a question about yours SD image - do you compile them from source or just add config files and some binary drivers/codecs/software?
Because I looked in /usr/bin directory and have found there a lot of command line software, looks like much more than LFS needs. I think adding source of transmission client shouldn't be a problem, because it is compiled for ubuntu armhf and arm64(I can find transmission-cli package here in "Packages" file http://ports.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-ports/di ... ates/main/ ) and it is command line software (hope won't bring dozens of dependencies).

I flashed the v5.95.5 image twice (Once from Windows, once from Linux using dd) and the v5.95.4 once. Tried the update tar from v5.95.3 to v5.95.4 once.

Every single time frame rate automation did not work with refresh rate pinned at 60hz. The other features of the distro worked fine! I can hardly believe it has something to do with a corruption. Not after several flashes and also other features not being impacted.

Version v5.95.3 has not failed me once! working reliably from day one and after reflashing it several times.

Not being a super Linux guru, could someone explain why this image might not work on the eMMc module? Is it due to the different device number that Linux gives to eMMc versus SD on the C1 or other droids?

No one is saying it will not work on a eMMc module if you read carefully.
It is just that you will see very little performance difference between running OpenELEC from a class 10 SD card compared to a eMMc.
eMMc's costing more will not give you very good bang for the buck when running OpenELEC.

Thanks, I asked because I've only got eMMC cards for the droids.

This uses Oversun's alternative C1 decoder, users may find better success decoding problem files. Do not use this edition for mpeg2/Interlaced Live TV

  • Do you have any mpeg2 (except ".vob" and ".ts") that works with stock decoder and not with Oversun one?

No to both questions.
What Does Not Hardware Decode:

Stock AMCodec: mpeg4, wmv1, wmv2 + mpeg2 in .vob & .ts containers (Other containers fine eg .avi)
Oversun's C1: mpeg2/Interlaced Live TV, wmv1, wmv2, wmv3 + mpeg2 in .vob & .ts containers.(Other containers fine eg .avi)

Did you send a sample of "mpeg2/Interlaced Live TV" to Oversun? So he can take a look. ;)
I don't know if it's possible to record Live TV or if you have another sample with the same problem..

I'm using his version with Ubuntu (and i don't think OpenELEC is a lot different..) for long time and i don't have problems with subtitles.
What kind of problems do you have?

I installed the Stormtrooper Edition and test some movies and it seems much better even if not perfect :
23.976 fps SD movies : No more artefacts and smooth but lose display during 2 seconds when fast forward or rewind (dc:c1-mpeg4 )
23.976 fps HD movies : Still smooth but loose screen for few seconds when fast forward or rewind (dc:c1-h264 )
24 fps SD movies : Smooth with dc:c1-mpeg4
25 fps SD movies : Some little slowdown with dc:c1-mpeg4 and much strong with dc:c1-h264
50 fps SD movies : Smooth with dc:c1-h264

Dear @wrxtasy, your build is really awesome!!!
Just a stupid question: I've installed yesterday the OpenELEC 5.95.5.0, the only way to update to 5.95.5.1 is to reflash the whole image on the sd card?

Or is there a "lighter" way? If I've to reflash the entire image, can I restore the previous kodi backup?

Thank you for your work!!!!

@ giacombum

Just put the update file with tar extension on /update folder and reboot.

@wrxtasy,

I had flickering issues on a movie with subtitles on at subtitles position using oversun option. I didn't face it with another movie so I will watch more and report back.

Thanks man this is running smooth on my C1+.

Only with CEC some buttons on my remote aren't working.

I have a samsung remote the red, green, yellow, blue and the return buttons aren't working.

So i can't get a context menu and i can't get the videocodec info menu while playing a movie or watching live tv.

Is there a workaround for this?

The phericals menu is also grey out so there are no settings avaible for CEC?

And also i noticed that there aren't settings for deinterlace in the video playback menu.

I did this but it didn't work for me when i scroll through the home screen there is a lot of taering on the homescreen.

I tried al the setting for Vertical blank sync.

Any other solutions?

Hello, first of all thanks for this excellent work!! ;)

I'd like to use a C1+ as a multimedia player (from USB and from DLNA server); I'd also love to pair it with a HD digital tuner (DVB-T MP4-capable) and use it as a live TV HD digital recorder.

Can you suggest an USB DVB-T HD tuner well supported by this branch of OpenELEC, on the C1+?

And by the way: can you suggest a nice remote which plays well with C1+ + this branch of OpenELEC?

Thank you very much!! :)

Very strange. It is the second time in two months that I find my box c1 hanged at boot screen. I was using Stormtrooper Edition. I can't connect via ssh to find the log. So just reporting.

I know the RTL820T dongles are supported, also really inexpensive since they can be used for SDR as well.

@ XFer, I use a cheap old PS3 Play TV - DVB-T usb tuner for mpeg2 and h264. This uses the very common DiBcom 7000PC (DIB 0700) chipset and works straight out of the box with OpenELEC and the C1(+)

Search for "Digital TV USB devices" and "DVB-T" in this list to see what is supported by the Odroid / Linux - Kernel:
https://github.com/hardkernel/linux/blo ... _defconfig

Have a look at this list for DVB-T usb tuners:
http://www.linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/D ... SB_Devices

This is the Firmware included in OpenELEC for DVB devices:
https://github.com/OpenELEC/dvb-firmwar ... r/firmware

The DVBHDHomerun Firmware is also included in OpenELEC.

Cheers.
- AMlogic Hardware uses the Kernel itself to send Keyboard commands via CEC to Kodi. I cannot configure any of this emulation.
Subsequently the C1 does not use the standard libCEC interpreter to talk to Kodi. This is why the Perhipherals Menu is greyed out.

However, it may be possible to see if the Coloured buttons are actually being received by Kodi by using an Add-On called:

http://kodi.wiki/view/Add-on:Keymap_Editor

I have not tried this personally, so do not know if it actually works.

- DeInterlacing is done in AMlogic Hardware, even when the Options are present on the Standard version of OpenELEC, you will find they have no effect anyway when Hardware decoding and deinterlacing is taking place.

- Peanut shaped remotes are the nicest design to fit comfortably in you hand.
- Backlit remote controls are the best for dark environments.
- MCE compatible remote's work out of the box.

- If you have a TV remote control like my Sony with a bunch of BD, DVD, Amp buttons across the top that are unused in your setup, its reasonably easy to say use the BD button and do a custom Lirc IR map of various buttons to control Kodi via the C1's IR receiver. Instructions are given in my first post.

You can even map any spare remote control you have in the house with Lirc. This work well with the C1's IR receiver and gives you the ultimate in custom button mapping to control Kodi.
If you want to do it the easy way, buy a Flirc usb IR receiver and it then its all point and click configuration on a PC to map a full keyboard for Kodi control.

I use a pretty old Harmony One remote control and a Flirc usb to control Kodi only because its carry over Hardware from my RPi setup and is plug and play compatible with the C1.

These popular backlit Peanut programmables seem pretty good value:
One For All OARUSB04G Four Device Universal Remote
Inteset 4-in-1 Universal Backlit IR Learning Remote

Program these as a MCE Remote, and then use QBJack's Lircd.conf file found here with the C1's IR receiver:

Thanks for your explanation i'm very happy that cec is still working even if turn off tv.

I have also a cubox i4 pro running openelec 5.95.5 and have a lot of trouble with cec.

Running your openelec on c1+ for a couple of days and its running really great and smooth playback to!

As you are the only one with this unique issue, you will have to provide us with a Debug log:
http://kodi.wiki/view/Log_file/Easy

Either there is something you are not telling us or your TV is not communicating with the C1 via HDMI properly. Something external to OpenELEC is probably going on. What exact Model of TV is causing the issue ?

Thanks for a great image, have one little question.
If pressing the home button on hardkernel orginal remote, You get the current play status
think it should show home screen if you press that button, is there something I can change myself?

or
copy the file lircd.conf from folder /etc/lirc and edit to you liking, and then put that version in folder /storage/.config/

First, thanks for your great work!
I have a problem upgrading to your 5.95.5.1 using the /storage/Update.
I received my C1 with OpenELEC unofficial 5.0.7 installed. I used WinScp to upload the OpenELEC-Odroid-C1-5.95.5.1.tar to C1. I notice that there is no "Update" folder under /storage. So I created the folder Update. Restarted C1, nothing happened. Turn off C1, and back on, still nothing happened. Could you please advise what I have done wrong? Thanks

P.S. I do notice that there is a folder /storage/.update. Is this the one for update?

:D I just tried the folder /storage/.update. It worked perfectly! Problem solved.

Yes use the /storage/.update folder if updating from a pre 5.95.x.x version of OpenELEC.
If you encounter problems with 5.95.5.1 after updating, I strongly suggest flashing a whole new 5.95.x.x image.

Obviously CEGLNativeTypeAmlogic::ProbeResolutions fails on v5.95.5.1 but works on v5.95.3

Please let me know if there is anything else I can do to make debugging easier. I really appreciate it that you inspect my problem :) Thanks for your great work!

Cheers. One question have you tried the StormTrooper Edition ?
This has a bunch of patches removed, and consquently may give you Dynamic Refresh Rate success.
If that version works I can narrow down what is causing the issue.

I've tried TvHeadend server with the latest image (5.95.5.1) but the PVR Addon "TVheadend HTSP Client" fails to connect to it.
I've manually checked and tvheadend server is running correctly (web-interface is active on port 9981).
Any solution?

The TvHeadend Server and Client definitely work, I've been using them all week.
Use the default Ip address on the Client > 127.0.0.1
I'm assuming you have connected a usb Tuner and configured the TvHeadend Server via the WebInterface.
This is a good guide:

A connected HDD will need to be formatted in a Linux ext2/3/4 or NTFS format if you want to record.
The HDD is automounted and found in the path /var/media/HDD-NAME

thanks for the answer,
I've already configured everything correctly since I used TVheadend server in Zalaare's image 5.0.7.0 and 5.0.8.0.
I went from Zalaare's image to this image with Update method, not clean flash, could that be the reason?

Quite possibly, there has been a bunch of library and firmware updates since that version.
I stated with a clean flash.

You could troubleshoot by temporarily renaming the the folders - pvr.hts and - packages and also service.multimedia.tvheadend
Found in /storage/.kodi/addons
Then restart OpenELEC and download the Client again.

The working Client is v2.1.6 and the Server HTS Tvheadend 0.0.0~unknown aka v4.0.3
