Volumio Ver 1.55 for C1

Post by odroid »

UPDATE!
There is an official Volumio support of for C1/C1+
https://volumio.org/volumio-and-the-new ... fi-shield/

Ignore below description and use the official Volumio OS image in the above link.

Volumio port for C1

What is the Volumio
https://volumio.org/

Prebuilt image for C1
http://dn.odroid.com/S805/Volumio/
or
http://odroid.in/mirror/dn.odroid.com/S805/Volumio/

Tested audio devices.
1. Hardkernel USB Audio Adapter
2. XMOS 24bit/192Khz USB DAC

How to use the Volumio
https://volumio.org/get-started/

Tips
* You can access the Volumio from your host PC or smartphone.
Run a web-browser and access "http://volumio.local/index.php"
If the URL doesn't work, I should put the IP address.

* "Menu --> Playback" to choose an audio output device.

* HDMI audio doesn't work.

How to make this image.
Quick and Dirty way. Even it works well, there are some errors in the boot process. Neet to clean up later.
This process was done in my Ubuntu x86 PC.

1. Install the official Ubuntu image V1.3 on your SD (or eMMC).
The latest image can be downloaded from here
http://odroid.com/dokuwiki/doku.php?id= ... nux_ubuntu
OS installation guide
http://odroid.com/dokuwiki/doku.php?id= ... hing_tools

2. Plug the SD card into the C1 and Boot it and Update the Kernel
Open a terminal (Ctrl-Alt-T) and type below instructions.

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install fix-w1-blacklist
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo reboot
And check the kernel version.

Code: Select all

uname -a
The result should be 3.10.70-74 or higher.

3. Download the Volumio root file system V1.5 to your host Linux PC.

Code: Select all

wget http://repo.volumio.org/Rootfs/Volumio1.5RootFS.tar.gz
4. Extract the downloaded file into the SD card

Code: Select all

sudo tar xvf Volumio1.5RootFS.tar.gz -C /media/j/trusty
sync
Note that the SD card was mounted to the /media/j/ on my PC.
Your PC should be different.

5. Move the SD card to your C1 and run!

Thanks Odroid!
small correction: the rootfs contains version 1.5.
Version 1.55 is not on the Volumio repo site (yet), but for the odroids this won't make a difference.
There is also a port for an X2, fully functional with an external DAC, for some reason the headphone jack is not working.

Thanks a lot Odroid! I will give it a try now.

Edit: looks great! Local files in various bitrates play back perfectly, web radio and NAS as source work fine as well. I am using a Speedlink Vigo USB soundcard, it is detected fine and can be selected as "Device" in the playback configuration.

One thing I saw so far is that the C1 is not shown in my local windows network. This works fine in the Volumio image for the RPi and is very handy to add files and web radio stations. Would be definitely nice to have for the Windows users.

Once you run the "webuiupdate.sh", you will have the 1.55.

Code: Select all

sudo sh webuiupdate.sh
I already ran the rescript before making the OS image.
So we can call it V1.55. ;) I've just check the release version via " Credits" menu.

Great job!
This image could be installed on my 5 years old 4gb t-flash card. Runs flawlessly with Creative USB sound card of 192Khz/24bit hifi audio. Time to buy another c1.

It seems that Samba is not included in the image. I added it manually with

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install samba
and afterwards, the C1 is shown in the Windows network explorer. Only one thing left: in Windows explorer, the C1 is now shown with "(None)" as hostname, although I set another name in the Volumio config, which is also correctly included in /etc/hostname. What do I have to change so that the hostname set in Volumio is detected system-wide?

@gkkpch Okay!

I have a question about the playlist saving issue.
Can you save and load the playlist on your X2 board?
My C1 port can't do it.

I need to check what cause the issue but it seems to be very hard.

surprised that it does not work, doubt whether this is C1 platform-specific.
I'll check this and let you know.

Ok, had a few minutes.
Seems to work OK on X2.
In the playlist tab (lower right corner) type a playlist name with your favorite name and hit <enter>.
Back to the main volumio menu, the browse tab (left/low corner) should give you the choice to select the playlist you just saved.
With the X2 port that works, no problem

Yes, I did today and it seems to work OK.
And playlists still work fine, so the problem is obviously not version related.

When you try to save a playlist, does it show up in /var/lib/mpd/playlists ?
Perhaps permissions problem?

Thank you so much!

After changing the permission of /var/lib/mpd/playlists and /var/lib/mpd/state
Now I can save and load the playlist!

Code: Select all

sudo chmod g+w /var/lib/mpd/music/ /var/lib/mpd/playlists/
sudo chgrp audio /var/lib/mpd/music/ /var/lib/mpd/playlists/
sudo chmod g+w /var/lib/mpd/music/ /var/lib/mpd/state
sudo chgrp audio /var/lib/mpd/music/ /var/lib/mpd/state

Hi all

I am a fan of SBC and music.

I have Pi B, Pi2, Cubox i4Pro and a C1. I also use Volumio for a time.

It is nice that you provide C1 Volumio image.

After testing I found some issues as below:

kernel 3.10.70-74 is not supported my 8188eu wifi dongle, I can't find way to upgrade it.

Once play hires file say 192kHz FLAC. it has a lot of lagging, click and pop.

Kindly have look to improve it.

Thanks.

Can you tell me which DAC do you use?
I had no issue with 192Khz/24bit FLAC files with my PD05 XMOS + PCM5102 DAC.

I think the RTL8188EU drivere was not enabled in the kernel config.

Thank for feedback.

my DAC is HRT microstreamer http://www.hirestech.com/product/?pid=107, which is very smoothly with Pi2 (RuneAudio, Volumio,etc...)

Hi,

in case someone is using Spotify (Premium) with Volumio and would like a nice companion app on Android: try Volumio Spotify Share from the Play Store.
You can use your normal Spotify App, select tracks and post them to your enabled Volumio Spotify daemon with Share -> Post on -> More... -> Send To Volumio .
You will find more information here: https://volumio.org/forum/share-spotify ... t2325.html

How to make the HK IR Remote work with this volumio image?
It seems lirc can't start because meson-ir module is not present.
Have you a solution for that?
I would like to control sound volume with the HK remote.

Hi,

just to let you know, that there is an optional MPD update, see this post on volumio.org
In case you had problems with the old version and decide to upgrade, follow the post exactly. There were reports, that this might corrupt some dependencies otherwise.

Also note, that Volumio 2 has been announced.

Hi,
I will post a step-by-step HOWTO for enabling the HK remote with the official anounced image for Volumio 1.55 within a couple of days.
The remote will support a simple set of functions like volume +/-, pause/play, next/prev track, seek fwd/ bkwd and powerdown.

Volumio will be available for the C1+ in the coming few days.
After that has been done, I will have another go at the IR question and post a howto for a simple version.
It works with Volumio and the available Debian packages, but with the HK remote one should use the new lirc long keypress option.
This enables you to use certain buttons for more than one purpose, unfortunately this is only supported from lirc version 0.9.2 onwards.
Debian does not support this yet.
Of course this can be compiled from source, but as Volumio is based on a minimal Debian distro, one would have to install all the build essentials first.
Perhaps this should be built into Volumio, perhaps something for the upcoming version 2.0

What you could try, with a Linux machine:
- take a Debian image for the U2, burn it to an sd card and mount it
- remove everything except the boot partition and the /lib folder
- take the official Volumio 1.55 Image, burn and mount it
- backup everything except boot partition and /lib folder
- copy the backed up contents to your prepared U2 image
- backup the image before you do any configuration
- boot and enjoy (I hope  )

Just to update :) Tryied volumio2 for odroix2. It bootup fine. Web UI is reachable at volumio.local. Radio works fine trough the headphone jack while flac or mp3 do not work both. It says failed to open audio output. I can not try an usb dac since i do not have it yet. Waiting for one already reported to work with volumio and rPI. It will arrive next month.
