KitKat 4.4.2 Pocket Rocket for ODROID-C1/C1+ (20151130)

Unread postby robroy » Mon Jan 26, 2015 1:12 am

I created an Android Kit Kat 4.4.2 image with a core suite of applications for a set-top box.

Download the image here:
http://oph.mdrjr.net/robroyhall/images/android/c1/KitKat-4.4.2_PocketRocket-C1-HDMI.20151130.img.xz

Pocket Rocket 4.4 works with both Class 10+ micro SD card and eMMC. However, an eMMC module is highly recommended for best performance because of Android's heavy disk I/O. When writing to eMMC, use the eMMC->SD card adapter that came with your module and copy the image directly.

Already have an Android image?
Upgrade your existing image to Pocket Rocket with the Epic Loot Software Collection, which includes Kodi 14 and more: viewtopic.php?f=113&t=8787

Applications:
    Chrome
    Firefox
Kodi 14 Helix with hardware acceleration
    Gmail
    Google Drive
    ES File Explorer
    Ultra Explorer
    Terminal Emulator
    MX Player
    tTorrent
BluezIME Controller with HID pack for use with Wiimote
Angry Birds Star Wars I and II
    Angry Birds Space
    RetroArch
    Ad Away
    Jota+ Text Editor
    Juice SSH
    bVNC
    Screen Orientation Control
    full!screen
    Youtube
    Netflix
    TED Talks
    Pandora
    PC Radio
    BusyBox
    SuperSU
    ZArchiver
Customizations left for you upon burning the image to your card:
    1. Configure the following apps and enable them with SuperUser permissions: AdAway, full!screen, and Screen Orientation Control.
    2. Start MXPlayer, select "Settings", choose "Decoder", and click all of the "H/W+ decoder" checkboxes.
Optional steps:
Features in this release:
Kodi 14 Helix with hardware acceleration
    Installable on 8GB eMMC
Notes:
KitKat 4.4.2 is still in Beta, and some features may not yet be working properly. Please provide feedback and bug reports directly to the Hardkernel developers on the main KitKat thread if you encounter any issues. Updates and changelogs are available here: http://odroid.com/dokuwiki/doku.php?id= ... se_android

When resizing the partitions using Gparted on a 64GB eMMC module, the FAT32 partition has a limit of 32GB in order to be recognized by the bootloader. It's recommended to backup, delete, recreate and restore the files to the FAT32 partition instead of resizing it.

The folder "/sdcard/Bootstrap" contains the installation files for apps that were downloaded from the developers' websites. Please copy the Bootstrap directory to an external USB drive for system restore purposes as it contains everything you need to rebuild Pocket Rocket from the official HardKernel release.

Kodi 14 requires root access before rendering video, so the application SuperSU has been included in order to manage superuser privileges.

If you experience poor playback in Kodi, use MX Player instead, which also has hardware acceleration.

You can provide feedback directly to the Kodi developers here: http://forum.xbmc.org/forumdisplay.php?fid=164.

Kodi nightly updates are available here: http://mirrors.xbmc.org/nightlies/android/arm/.

Great image!

Can you check whether the Netflix really works well or not?
As you know well, other ODROIDs have the compatibility issue with the Netflix.

So... many... questions...

I'll try and keep it brief. If I recall the Odroid guys were planning on sticking with 4.4.2 as opposed to 4.4.4. So does this constitute an "official" image ? I guess the better question is more along the lines of did the Odroid guys build a 4.4.4 with the appropriate BSPs or is is something that's been created out of 4.4.2 with some 4.4.4 stuff build on top ? My main interest is the Bluetooth via USB which, as is my understanding, isn't compiled into the existing "official" Android image at all.

Also, the "some features don't work"... don't suppose there's a list or some kind of changelog over the 4.4.2 image ?

Thanks

Pete

No, this is a community image. It's the Hardkernel image for 4.4.2 (I initially mislabeled it) with a lot of useful applications pre-installed.

I haven't actually heard of Bluetooth USB. Would you mind downloading the image and trying it out?

FYI, If it's not working (yet) in the official image, it won't be working on this one (yet). However, once the issue is resolved, you can use the ODROID Updater to update this image.

I thought "BluezIME Controller with HID pack for use with Wiimote" did not work in Android 4.2 or above? Is this not the case or has there been some change or update that made this work?

I have used the Wiimote with 4.1.2 using BluezIME, so I think that sentence that you quoted is qualified by the previous sentence that pertains to specific ROMs (they are in the same paragraph):

"Wiimote does not work on devices using either Samsung Galaxy, HTC Sense or LG ROMs with Android 2.x (unknown error: 0)."

Would you mind downloading the image and testing your Wiimote with it? I believe that it should work properly, but that is the only real way to find out ;)

Just one thought:

I think that tools like full!screen are obsolete. The often do more harm than good. If you already have root, then you should use the Xposed framework and the GavityBox module. Much more options and much more stable.
Xposed runs perfectly on the C1.
You should feature it in your magazine, sometime.

I believe that this image will also run as-is on SD card, but Android is very disk intensive and you will get lots of "not responding" popups. You are welcome to try it, however :)

Let me know how that goes, I'd be interested to try that myself.

UPDATE: Had a chance to try it out briefly on an SD card, everything I tried seemed to work alright. That being said, my Wi-Fi dongle isn't currently supported, so I couldn't try Chrome or anything else requiring internet. Good to know that it does boot and everything, though.

On a somewhat unrelated note, to flash it onto the SD card on a Mac, I used a program called ApplePi Baker. Technically, it's designed for the Raspberry Pi, but it works just fine for flashing ODROID images as well. I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a GUI for flashing images from a Mac.

Just to chip in. I've installed this on the UHS 8gb SD card I got with my C1 (originally with Ubuntu). It's working fine, pretty much flawless really. Not screaming fast with disk access, but not bad either.

A quick question with regards to this build (probably android on the C1 overall, but I don't know): I need a microphone. Will a "plug and play" USB microphone work? I'm nervous about USB "sound cards", as I don't want to create sound issues when I don't already have them :)

The goal? Well, Tasker + Autovoice works fantastic on my phone to fully control a media center. A functioning microphone with my C1 would mean I'd have total voice control of it, and well.. That's just awesome.

That is a great question! I don't have a USB microphone to test, but perhaps @odroid or @mdrjr would be able to tell us whether the drivers are included in the stock Android build.

In the case that the USB microphone does work out-of-the-box, would you be interested in writing an article for ODROID Magazine about your setup? Voice control is indeed epic :)

USB Audio dongle is tested on Android for sound out and in. Other USB Audio dongle would work, if it's not required its own specific driver.

Finally an image that actually works on this thing, unlike the official ones, which failed to boot after install.
KK PR Booted up instantly from finishing installation.
Tried kodi, works flawlessly, even with microSD card. Changed res to 1080p, odroid utility does
what it's supposed to, although the picture on TV is slightly zoomed out, by I'd say 10%. Is there a resize
or rescale option in Odroid utility to make the picture zoom in ?
Thumb's up !

Thank you for the nice feedback :D :D :D

You need to adjust the overscan option on your HDMI monitor in order to see the full picture at 1080p. The best way is to google "<your monitor model> overscan", or look through the manual that came with it regarding how to change the picture size.

Rob,

that worked perfectly, thank you for providing this image, as I could not get supersu to install properly on the HK image.
Two questions:
- is it safe to update supersu from google play?
- I noticed that superuser app is still installed alongside in your image...can I safely delete it?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think it's possible to remove the SuperUser app because it's marked as one of the core system applications.

I actually never tried the deinstall...the option is visible/selectable in settings -> apps -> superuser
My understandung is that you cannot use both and only use one or the other....since kodi
does not like superuser, this step is suggested after installing supersu in the thread of the original image.

Using the recent version, its running fine, but i experience some problems with the wifi 4.0 dongle from odroid:

1. its not finding 2,4ghz networks reliable
2. While working on 5ghz fine, the system freezes from time to time (temp reads 71°C with heatsink, supply is 5V 4A)

in dmesg i notice a constant spam of this:
Code: Select all
<3>[  871.717680@0] Uart 0 Driver: Overflow Error while receiving a character
<3>[  871.734845@0] Uart 0 Driver: Overflow Error while receiving a character

for linux i read about disabling the powermanagemanent functions and encryption hardware offload, but i have no idea how to set kernel module paramters under android...

Does the WiFi 4 module work on the vanilla Android image?

is there anyway to connect to android using only a command line.

I put the image to a sdcard and connected to C1, but i don't have yet a micro hdmi to connect it to a tv ou monitor.
So i thought suing ssh, telnet, rlogin nothing works.

Is there anything on this image that in the first run i can connect to it?

You can use ADB by connecting the microUSB from the C1 to a USB port on your host machine in order to get a command prompt. Google "Android Debug Bridge" for more information.

ADB is command-line only.

I haven't experimented with this particular piece of code, but you could possibly download a vnc server and push it via ADB, then launch it on the command line, as described here: https://code.google.com/p/fastdroid-vnc/

I have a quick question about your Android distribution.

The official version offers Hardkernel (selfinstall-odroidc-eng-s805_4.4.2_dev_master-v1.2-195) weighs 362Mo unzipped
Your distribution weighs over 6,8Go

I wanted to know what it is either too heavy, games or software ?

So, I ordered the Bluetooth receiver that offers Hardkernel, think it will be supported in your distribution?

Thank You

That is the standard size for all of my images, and most of it is empty partition space.

If Bluetooth is working on the official distribution, it is also working on Pocket Rocket since it is directly based on Hardkernel's release. You can always use the ODROID Updater app to bring in the latest changes if necessary.

I have a few questions about this build:

1) Does Netflix run at full HD?
2) Does anyone use Kodi to stream full HD content from a SAMBA share? If so, how well does it do (network and video wise) ?

1) Does Netflix run at full HD?

Yes, if the video itself is available in HD. It takes a few seconds to ramp up to 720/1080p, depending on your connection speed, and may appear pixelated until it reaches full speed.
2) Does anyone use Kodi to stream full HD content from a SAMBA share? If so, how well does it do (network and video wise) ?

Streaming with Kodi works perfectly with HD videos, as long as you have a decent intranet, which in most cases requires a wired connection or a line-of-sight wireless one. You can alternatively use MX Player to stream videos from a Samba share, and even launch them from the ES File Explorer which automatically detects Samba drives on the network in the LAN tab. ES File Explorer will ask you which application you'd like to use for streaming when you first launch a video file.

I have another question, in the list of software, I saw that there Retroarch: D
Can you tell me if all the cores are present: FBA, Mame etc ...

Do you think the ODROID C1 is it low to operate heavy arcade games: NEOGEO, CPS3, IGS, PSX, Nintendo 64 emulator with Retroarch.

A person at home HArdkernel made a video with Tekken 6 that works well with the PPSSPP emulator, I have a little hard to believe that this little card is so powerful.

Would it be possible to have a distribution of your demo video to see boot time etc ...

On youtube I have not found a video, it's a shame.

One last thing, I saw that there is an IR port on ODROID C1, is what the current remote microsoft works with Kodi or OpenELEC (Raspberry PI B +) will work with C1 ODROID or you need to install the drivers?

Thank you and sorry for all these questions.
