GPS problem on 4.4.4

Unread post by Richfilth » Sat May 18, 2019 7:58 pm

Android 4.4.4 running on a basic C1. I have a USB GPS module connected, based on the PL2303 chip, but when I open Google Maps or the GPS Test app, no location is found.

If I open a terminal and run cat /dev/ttyUSB*, then I see lots of GPS-based serial data including co-ordinates, so it looks like the USB module is running and receiving a signal, but for some reason the apps aren't picking up this data.

Location service is ON and set to Device Only.

Does anyone know how to proceed?

Digging deeper:

/system/build.prop contains the following lines:

Code: Select all

ro.kernel.android.gps=/dev/ttyACM0
ro.kernel.android.gps.speed=9600
And it's basically exactly the same problem as in this thread: viewtopic.php?t=18142
But no solution was posted...

Hi Richfilth, normaly it should run if you change this line ro.kernel.android.gps=/dev/ttyACM0 to ro.kernel.android.gps=/dev/ttyUSB0. But first check with ls -la /dev/ttyUSB* if it is really ttyUSB0. Then you would need to reboot. Be careful with editing the build.prop, and do not change the permissions, it can result in a boot loop. Also you can change the baud rate to higher one if your GPS adapter does support it.

Thanks joerg. Running cat /dev/ttyUSB0 displayed all the NMEA data, so I guess that's the right number to use.
I edited build.prop with vi (it took a while to remember the commands!), rebooted, and loaded the GPS test app. I immediately saw 8 satellites in view, so although it still says "No Fix" I know that Android is now getting data in from the USB module. Hopefully it just needs a bit of time to latch on to the signals.

Thanks for the help!
