[SOLVED]When updating Kernel I get "No space left on device"

Unread postby joelnet » Mon Jan 22, 2018 10:28 am

Distribution: ubuntu-16.04.3-minimal-odroid-c1-20170914.img

I am following the directions for ODROID-C1 mainline (experimental!) from here https://github.com/umiddelb/armhf/wiki/ ... ARM-device

When I attempt to copy files to /media/boot I am getting many like:

Code: Select all
cp: cannot create regular file '/media/boot/xenvm-4.2.dtb': No space left on device
cp: cannot create regular file '/media/boot/zynq-parallella.dtb': No space left on device
cp: cannot create regular file '/media/boot/zynq-zc702.dtb': No space left on device
cp: cannot create regular file '/media/boot/zynq-zc706.dtb': No space left on device
cp: cannot create regular file '/media/boot/zynq-zed.dtb': No space left on device
cp: cannot create regular file '/media/boot/zynq-zybo.dtb': No space left on device

Code: Select all
$ df -h
Filesystem      Size  Used Avail Use% Mounted on
udev            374M     0  374M   0% /dev
tmpfs            81M  4.3M   77M   6% /run
/dev/mmcblk0p2  7.4G  2.2G  5.2G  29% /
tmpfs           403M     0  403M   0% /dev/shm
tmpfs           5.0M     0  5.0M   0% /run/lock
tmpfs           403M     0  403M   0% /sys/fs/cgroup
/dev/mmcblk0p1  128M   16M  113M  12% /media/boot

Code: Select all
$ df -i
Filesystem     Inodes  IUsed  IFree IUse% Mounted on
udev            95664   1391  94273    2% /dev
tmpfs          102928   1127 101801    2% /run
/dev/mmcblk0p2 491520 109055 382465   23% /
tmpfs          102928      1 102927    1% /dev/shm
tmpfs          102928      2 102926    1% /run/lock
tmpfs          102928     11 102917    1% /sys/fs/cgroup
/dev/mmcblk0p1      0      0      0     - /media/boot

I need some help to determine why I cannot copy files to /media/boot.

Cheers!

Your boot partition(FAT32) seems to be corrupted.
Can you try "chkdsk" on /dev/mmcblk0p1 ?

Is there a command to run on linux? I attempted fsck using this method:

Code: Select all
sudo touch /forcefsck
sudo reboot

I also reflashed ubuntu-16.04.3-minimal-odroid-c1-20170914 onto the USB stick using Startup Disk Creator.

I received the same errors after reflashing.

Try to use "Etcher" for flashing OS image.
https://wiki.odroid.com/troubleshooting ... ing_etcher

And try to create & edit a file on the boot partition.
Code: Select all
touch /media/boot/test.txt
nano /media/boot/test.txt

I was able to flash using Etcher. One cool thing about Etcher was that I can flash the xz directly without needing to extract it. The downside is the partition is only 1.7GB and doesn't expand to the full available storage.

There were some errors flashing with Etcher (identified by gparted), so I had to perform an fsck on the device, and then using gparted i performed a "check", which filled the remaining space.

After all this, I received the same errors.

It seems like some of the files copied, so I can write to the partition, but not all of them, it aborts part way through.

I'm gonna go through this whole process again, but I'll expand that boot partition to about double before restarting this. A Project for tomorrow I guess.

After some testing, I have identified my problem as being the amount of files and not the size of files on disk.

I am following the directions here (ODROID-C1 mainline (experimental!)) https://github.com/umiddelb/armhf/wiki/ ... ARM-device

These directions create over 500 files, which I am suspecting is too many files for a 128MB FAT16 partition.

Though I am having problems resizing the boot partition. I will create another thread for that (viewtopic.php?f=112&t=29650) and consider this issue resolved.

We've never tried the upstream kernel on C1.

Ok this is good to hear. I have abandoned my attempts to install this Kernel. I was able to follow all instructions but the device wouldn't boot. I'll either wait for support or upgrade to a device that is supported.

Thanks for the help!
