Really great update.

Using hifi-shield with Kodi is perfect with this image. I've tried other images before, none is as good as this.

But there are two problems for me:
1. dynamic refresh rate on Kodi does not work. I already set Kodi to change refresh rate automatically but still there is no change.
2. the command "AE_SINK=ALSA kodi" not working too.

Can these problem be fixed?

Did you updated to latest kodi?
You also need to change the HPD option on boot.ini

Thanks for your quick response.

I think Kodi is already up-to-date. (build 16.1, complied: Jul 26) And there is no any update when I run sudo apt-get upgrade.

I try change HPD back and forth
- setenv hpd "0"
- setenv hpd "1"
but kodi still can't change display refresh rate.

By the way, the command "AE_SINK=ALSA kodi" is not working too.
Edited: "AE_SINK=ALSA kodi" is working now, not sure why it's not before.

What about the dynamic refresh rate issue?

I read about C2's ubuntu release note stating that the dynamic refresh rate is not implemented yet. Maybe it will be the same on C1 or this can be fixed manually somehow?

Best regards.

For Kodi's dynamic refresh rate.

1. Please check file permissions of two sysfs files.

Code: Select all

odroid@odroid64:~$ ls -al /sys/class/amhdmitx/amhdmitx0/disp_cap
-r--r--r-- 1 root root 4096 Feb 11 11:28 /sys/class/amhdmitx/amhdmitx0/disp_cap
odroid@odroid64:~$ ls -al /sys/class/display/mode
-rw-rw-rw- 1 root root 4096 Dec 31 1969 /sys/class/display/mode
Kodi needs read permission of ' /sys/class/amhdmitx/amhdmitx0/disp_cap' file and write permission of '/sys/class/display/mode' file.
The default file permission of '/sys/class/display/mode' is 644. So, change the '/sys/class/display/mode' file permission before executing Kodi.

Code: Select all

odroid@odroid64:~$ sudo chmod 666 /sys/class/display/mode
If you often use Kodi's dynamic refresh rate feature, then please add the chmod command in '/etc/rc.local' file.
* /etc/rc.local

Code: Select all

odroid@odroid64:~$ cat /etc/rc.local
#!/bin/sh -e
#
# rc.local
#
# This script is executed at the end of each multiuser runlevel.
# Make sure that the script will "" on success or any other
# value on error.
#
# In order to enable or disable this script just change the execution
# bits.
#
# By default this script does nothing.

if [ -f /aafirstboot ]; then /aafirstboot start ; fi

if [ -f /aafirstboot ]; then /aafirstboot start ; fi

if [ -f /aafirstboot ]; then /aafirstboot start ; fi

if [ -f /aafirstboot ]; then /aafirstboot start ; fi

if [ -f /aafirstboot ]; then /aafirstboot start ; fi

chmod 666 /sys/class/display/mode

exit 0
2. Please check list of capable display modes.

Code: Select all

odroid@odroid:~$ cat /sys/class/amhdmitx/amhdmitx0/disp_cap
480i
480p
576i
576p
720p
1080i
1080p*
720p50hz
1080i50hz
1080p50hz
1080p24hz
If you cannot see any value from the '/sys/class/amhdmitx/amhdmitx0/disp_cap', then check the hpd option in boot.ini file. The hpd option must be "1" to get the capable display modes from '/sys/class/amhdmitx/amhdmitx0/disp_cap' file.

Code: Select all

odroid@odroid:~$ cat /media/boot/boot.ini | grep "setenv hpd"
setenv hpd "1"
REMEBER
Kodi for Linux does not support automatic resolution chage even if Adjust refresh rate option is enabled. Kodi for Linux supports only automatic Hz chage for the dynamic refresh rate.

Kodi IPTV Simple Client not working.
Same issue with all PVR clients as Ubuntu 14.04 with Kodi 15.2.

I hoped that this version will fix it...
With OpenElec 7.0.0 available at the following link all works fine: http://forum.odroid.com/viewtopic.php?f=114&t=16093
Unfortunately I need also to manage sudo and install other programs so I would like to use normal Ubuntu distro.

Anyone with the same issue?

Thank you for solution of dynamic refresh rate. It's now working with Kodi. But a little buggy though.

When Kodi change refresh rate to 24hz, TV display will blink back to desktop first then get back to kodi again. After stop playing video the display will not change refresh rate back to 60hz which make Kodi GUI being not smooth with 24hz.

Hi,

Having 16.04 is great news.
Did anyone try upgrading an existing 14.04.05? Or is reflashing the only supported method?

Thanks.

We couldn't find a solution to upgrade from 14.04.
You need to reflash it.

btw, unchecked GSSAPI doesn't help too

@Sahab:
By default root login over ssh with password auth is disabled for the Odroid-C1 (in contrast to other odroids). Look in /etc/ssh/sshd_config:

Code: Select all

PermitRootLogin prohibit-password
You can change the line above to "PermitRootLogin yes" and restart the ssh daemon.

@mdrjr: Any particular reason why the root filesystem has no journalling enabled?

Code: Select all

root@odroid:~# dumpe2fs /dev/mmcblk0p2 | head
dumpe2fs 1.42.13 (17-May-2015)
Filesystem volume name: rootfs
Last mounted on: /
Filesystem UUID: e139ce78-9841-40fe-8823-96a304a09859
Filesystem magic number: 0xEF53
Filesystem revision #: 1 (dynamic)
Filesystem features: ext_attr resize_inode dir_index filetype extent flex_bg sparse_super large_file huge_file uninit_bg dir_nlink extra_isize
Filesystem flags: signed_directory_hash
Default mount options: user_xattr acl
Filesystem state: not clean
Errors behavior: Continue

Is it to improve performance (skip writes to journal) or increase flash lifetime? Has anyone measured wear with journalling on (I'm using eMMC)?

I'm asking this because it seems that the filesystem can break on some unclean shutdowns:

Code: Select all

Begin: Running /scripts/local-premount ... done.
Begin: Will now check root file system ... fsck from util-linux 2.27.1
[/sbin/fsck.ext4 (1) -- /dev/mmcblk0p2] fsck.ext4 -a -C0 /dev/mmcblk0p2
rootfs was not cleanly unmounted, check forced.
rootfs: Deleted inode 1248 has zero dtime. FIXED.
Inode 52515, end of extent exceeds allowed value
(logical block 377, physical block 850688, len 110)

rootfs: UNEXPECTED INCONSISTENCY; RUN fsck MANUALLY.
        (i.e., without -a or -p options)
fsck exited with status code 4
done.
Failure: File system check of the root filesystem failed
The root filesystem on /dev/mmcblk0p2 requires a manual fsck

I've done an upgrade and it seems to work fine.
I've run

Code: Select all

do-release-upgrade
Then reenabled the odroid repos and did

Code: Select all

apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade
No issues AFAIK

Guys,

which CPU governor works in this new release? My tutorial I've written is not working anymore (http://forum.odroid.com/viewtopic.php?f=112&t=18461). With my settings set from the tutorial, the CPU speed stays ALWAYS on 96MHz no matter what the load is. With ondemand it's still in full speed classically.

Also is the overclocking working in new release ? The max speed I can reach is 1,54GHz even with this set for all cores:
root@sojuz:/media/odroid/owncloud_share/cloud_data/pitr/files/Filmy# cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/cpuinfo_max_freq
1728000

I've managed to get half-functionality with
cpufreq-set -g conservative
cpufreq-set -u 1.73Ghz

The freqs seem to jump depending on the load, but again only 1,54GHz max, and I don't know how to set it persistently acrros the reboot. Also I'm seeing following when the frequency changes depending on the load:
Feb 12 14:31:54 sojuz kernel: [75838.887121@0] meson_cs_set_voltage, voltage is too large:1160000
Feb 12 14:31:55 sojuz kernel: [75839.087107@1] meson_cs_set_voltage, voltage is too large:1150000
Feb 12 14:31:57 sojuz kernel: [75841.087115@3] meson_cs_set_voltage, voltage is too large:1150000
Feb 12 14:31:57 sojuz kernel: [75841.187114@3] meson_cs_set_voltage, voltage is too large:1160000
Feb 12 14:32:05 sojuz kernel: [75849.487097@0] meson_cs_set_voltage, voltage is too large:1150000

Thanks.

CPU Frequency and Governors didn't changed from previous releases.
Those are kernel configuration and it didn't changed.

Something had to be changed, because it's not working with the same settings. Also the cpufreq-info says the max is 1,73 but it never reaches it, and it stops on 1,54GHz. I've tested it several times. :(

Would it be possible to get an Ubuntu 16 LTS minimal image with SSH remote login enabled? For embedded use cases it would be great to just flash the image and start working with the Odroid system by connecting via ethernet.

I don't understand why SSH remote login has been disabled on the image. For users with monitor it's easy to disable, they can log in. For users without a monitor or without MicroHDMI-cable the release is just not usable because they can't log in at all.

Building my own image seems to be difficult as the docs for building the minimal image appear to be outdated (Ubuntu 14).

I would really appreciate an image with SSH remote login enabled.

Well, ssh is enabled by default, but ssh will not allow root login with password by default. Login as user odroid instead

Just for info, I just try on two C1+ with mSD Samsung EVO... doesn't work (lot of errors during boot). Look fine with Sandisk

Using SSH via LAN with ubuntu-16.04-minimal-odroid-c1-20160803.img and root/odroid or odroid/odroid I only get "Permission denied, please try again."

Can you try

Code: Select all

ssh -vvv your-odroid-ip /bin/sh
and paste back the output?

Our recent minimal Ubuntu images have no ssh features.
Connect an HDMI screen and configure the ssh server manually.

We consider making new images in September.

Hi,

I have found following bugs with the mate release:

- starting from yesterday, newly installed system does not tolerate the upgrade procedure (sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade) - it just stops to boot after next system restart.
- kodi-pvr-hts package seems to be corrupted - it does not work properly.
- quite useful package "bash-completion" is not installed by default.
- in order to connect to system via ssh, all its ssh related packages have to be reinstalled (sudo apt-get purge openssh-* && sudo apt-get install ssh). Otherwise all connection attempts fail with "Permission denied, please try again" error message.

Ubuntu 16.04 LTS Release

Unread post by Marszczak » Mon Aug 15, 2016 3:37 am

I have learned in the hard way that I should stick to 14.04 don't do any upgrades whatsoever including Kodi 15.2/3 rc and all works flawlessly including i2s dac.
I tried few times to upgrade but always had to roll back the changes.
Since that decision I have no problems.
I'd suggest to the HK to stop making new images and focus on older ones and make sure they work.
To me it seems each release is worse judging after your comments like sth was working and it does not anymore.
I know it is development board but if I have to build is by myself where is a place for HK then?

Have you tried building it yourself? It's a great learning experience, but I recommend having a serial adapter nearby. No software release is perfect, but this doesn't mean you should settle for old software

Heads-up guys. I just did an apt-get update;apt-get upgrade;apt-get dist-upgrade;apt-get autoremove on 16.04 MATE and now my C1+ won't boot.

I'm not sure exactly what the package names were, but I think there was just one linux-image package in the dist-upgrade (as of Aug 14, 2016).

I'm going to re-image and then run the dist-upgrade again. Let's see if it causes a failure to boot again...

EDIT: I guess I am experiencing exactly what smv1210 reported a couple of posts above mine.

I just tried imaging the old 14.04.3 release, and it booted fine, until I ran apt-get update;apt-get upgrade after which it went into a boot loop. Not sure why--I am now reimaging 16.04 MATE to see if it will run flawlessly prior to an apt-get upgrade; I will also reimage 14.04 and see if it too runs flawlessly prior to an apt-get upgrade. If it turns out neither image will take an apt-get upgrade, it may be that some package update breaks both OSes on the C1+.

If I can get the images to fail without ever applying updates, then it may be hardware failure.

Okay, I just replicated the failure.
It is this package that breaks 16.04's ability to boot:

linux-image-3.10.96-158_20160813_armhf.deb

When it replaces linux-image-3.1.0.96-154_20160713_armhf.deb during an apt-get dist-upgrade, that's when it breaks. Prior to this upgrade, I could reboot the C1+ repeatedly without trouble.

UPDATE: After reimaging 14.04.3 and applying all updates, it boots fine, so this problem is limited to only 16.04. The boot problem I was having with 14.04 before must've been due to my insufficient power for eMMC issue, now remedied. 16.04 does fail with linux-image-3.1.0.96-154_20160713_armhf.deb, regardless of whether I am using eMMC or microSD.

I suspect that something has happened/changed with some of system's repositories in 13-14.08.2016 time frame.
Cause, when I did the same on 12.08.2016 (mean; have re-imaging my mSD card several times, and performing system's update-upgrade after that) the system kept booting just OK.

I've found the issue :( Update is coming to fix...

GCC didn't liked some AMlogic code :( Simple as that.
