Cant fine anywhere the official 18.04.1 image

Unread postby ujsrwidc » Sat Nov 03, 2018 9:06 pm

Here is been told, that the latest official ubuntu image is 18.04.1 for the c1.
viewtopic.php?f=112&t=22789&start=100#p230040

Filename: ubuntu-18.04.1-mate-odroid-c1-20180726.img

Its also written like that on the official wiki: https://wiki.odroid.com/odroid-c1/os_images/ubuntu/v3.0

There are 4 official servers. None of those had this file. Over 3 months are gone since release. The file is still missing.

Where can i get ubuntu-18.04.1-mate-odroid-c1-20180726.img ?

The file is not there. Just copy this filename text into your system cache: ubuntu-18.04.1-mate-odroid-c1-20180726.img
Then open up the link you have written. Press ctrl+f and then ctrl+v. You would see that the file is not there like i mentioned in my first post. There is also no ubuntu-18.04.1-mate-odroid-c1-20180726.img.xz (for a compressed version of the file). The file that is beeing mentioned in the forum post and in the wiki cant be find anywhere. I have searched now for longer time.

It says 18.04 in the name - I don't see the problem.

The official naming by hardkernel is "ubuntu-18.04.1-mate-odroid-c1-20180726.img" like written in the wiki and in the forum by hardkernel itself. The 18.04.1 is the new LTS release from 18.04 and includes many changes done inside the system since the first 18.04 release.
Here some information: https://fridge.ubuntu.com/2018/07/26/ub ... -released/

I am simply searching for the official released image named ubuntu-18.04.1-mate-odroid-c1-20180726.img like written in the wiki and the forum.

Flash "ubuntu-18.04-3.10-mate-odroid-c1-20180726.img.xz" image and update the system with the following instruction.
https://wiki.odroid.com/odroid-c1/os_im ... st-upgrade

And you will have 18.04.1.

The file isn't there because it has been updated/revised and the wiki simply hasn't.

ubuntu-18.04-3.10-mate-odroid-c1-20180726.img.xz

I figured you would understand.

Would the forum post and the wiki i linked in the first post be fixed? Because now they say that the latest image is a file that does not exist anywhere. The mentioned file is not outdated - its non existent.

How can i know that? There is no SHA512SUM available to compare the files. Also the wiki and the forum post are mentioning a img file. Not a img.xz file. How should professional users be able to follow the official documentation recently? When my boss say to me "take the latest official file" then there is no source that is telling me the name of the latest official file. Also i cant compare if i have the latest official file correctly downloaded because of missing SHA512SUMs.

A professional user would probably have seen that the file is not there, but another file with a similar name is and would have downloaded that file.
A professional user would also know that you can simply update Ubuntu to get to the latest "Point-Release"
But you are correct, people that are new to linux and these kind of things might have trouble finding the correct file, and the wiki should be updated for these people.

If you look again, you will find, that there is a "md5sum" file, even if it's not SHA512 it's still a valid checksum to compare the files.

My point was different. If i had a SHA512SUM i simply wont have to care about the filename. Now the only thing i had was a filename of a non existing file. If in the forum or in the wiki i had the SHA512SUM listed, then i could find out on myself what is the correct file. Just write a script that downloads everything, extracts everything and then compares with the SHA512SUM. But there is no checksum.

Which is total bullshit, SHA512SUM is just a hash-sum over a input file. It's highly unlikely but two different files can theoretically have the same hash-sum, so KNOWING the correct filename is actually nearly as important as the hash-sum itself.

Totally unnecessary and not helpful at all a checksum in a forum/wiki has absolutely no value at all.
Rarely anyone is doing something like that, and also this proves nothing. Most major distributions have "daily" images, which are build every single day, and believe me they do not change their websites every single day to put a stupid SHA512SUM there which has absolutely nothing to do with "proving" what's the latest version.
That checksum ONLY exists to give you the possibility to compare your downloaded file with the checksum to verify if your download was successful, it is NOT there to point you to the "correct file"; that's just stupid.
A forum or a wiki is NOT a secure environment, logins can be hacked text can be altered. Putting the checksum next to the file is probably much more secure than putting it on a publicly available website with THOUSANDS of possible users with access to the site to change it.
The hash-sum is only there to make sure your download was correct, and once again it doesn't matter if it's SHA512 or MD5 or whatever.

ujsrwidc wrote:But there is no checksum.

THERE IS a checksum directly in the folder next to the images... the checksum is to verify the IMAGE not to tell you what's the latest file.

And to be honest, each of the files have a DATE in it's name, if you're unable to figure out what file has the latest date, I wonder if you are suited for the task you're suppose to do.

Can you tell me some more about how there would be a collision in SHA512SUMs in your lifetime? MD5 - yes, everyone knows that. SHA1 - its know that its for decoration: https://sha2017.org/blog/sha-1-i-m-made-for-decoration
But even SHA256 is petty good: https://crypto.stackexchange.com/questi ... -found-yet

Can you please upload two different files to some one click hoster that provide the same SHA512SUM? I would like to see that. I am really interested into such a case.

I guess you have not understand how this works, or else you would not ask such a question.
