RJ45 Ethernet Port not working!

Hello,

I just got my ODROID-C1 and wanted to try it out with the official Ubuntu image. However the RJ45 Ethernet port doesn't work. Only the right LED is on constant orange. It is connected to a Gigabit Ethernet router. I have a LAN-USB adapter, so I plugged it in and now I can connect via SSH to the device since it now has network connection. I have no microHDMI cable. I bought the device + 5V 2A Power Plug from Pollin, a few days ago. (http://www.pollin.de/shop/dt/MzY0ODQ2OT ... _8_mm.html)

I tried the official images: "ubuntu-14.04.2lts-lubuntu-odroid-c1-20150401.img" and "ubuntu-14.04.2lts-lubuntu-odroid-c1-20150401.img" from the Wiki.


Why it doesnt work?

Ok, found the problem: update the Linux Firmware, using odroid-utility.sh Maybe someone can upload an updated version of the official releases Ubuntu for ODROID-C1, because most people wont have a LAN-USB adapter to update the firmware themselfs w/o the builtin Ethernet port.

This fix only worked for:
* ubuntu-14.04.2lts-lubuntu-odroid-c1-20150401.img.xz
* ubuntu-14.04.1lts-minimal-odroid-c1-20150131.img.xz


How to fix it on your own:

sudo su
odroid-utility.sh
Choose: (2) "Update your Kernel/Firmware" [ENTER]
Choose: (2) "Install firmware files to /lib/firmware" [ENTER]
reboot now

BUT, does NOT work for all other Linux OS images I found on the forum. For example the images from "loboris": "Ubuntu precise&trusty&utopic&vivid and Debian wheezy&jessie" ... thread: http://forum.odroid.com/viewtopic.php?f ... net#p62681 I tried nearly all of his images, but my ODROID-C1 never made a network connection, either with builtin nor with the LAN-USB adapter. :( How do I fix this? :cry:

Something is wrong on your hardware or network connection.
The ubuntu-14.04.2lts-lubuntu-odroid-c1-20150401.img file works out of the box.

Can I rule out a hardware defect? Because the ODROID-C1 worked perfect after running odroid-utility.sh and choosing "Install firmware files to /lib/firmware". Can it even be a hardware defect or damaged hardware? Is it possible that not all models are built 100% identical components? :|

Yes, we have used the same components.
AFAIK, the files in the /lib/firmware are mostly WiFi firmware. It should not be related to the Ethernet.
Do you use the Gbit Ethernet switch with the CAT6 or CAT5E cables?

Cable: CAT.5 100MHZ
but I tried with 3 different CAT 5 cables, non worked.

Can you try to force the 100Mbps mode before update the firmware files?
Adding "ethtool -s eth0 speed 100 duplex full" in /etc/rc.local or similar ways.
It will narrow down the root causes.

Have you maybe forced your switch to 1gbps? The old kernel wasn't capable of doing 1gbps. That was enabled in one of the newer kernels, somewhere at the beginning of this year.

no difference - still doesnt work. But its strange that the LED is orange and constant on and not green. When I ping some near IP address of the device, it slightly flashes. Then it goes constant orange again. No IP and no network activity.

(1) I think we have too little information to troubleshoot this. Maybe the logs are helpful? But you need to tell me, what logs you need. Is it possible to write these logs to a file, so I can retrive them at power-off with the Ubuntu machine from the microSD card? And only get a set of "fresh" logs from power-on ... 1 minute running and power-off.

(2) Is it possible to setup the WiFi, so at least I got a SSH connection into the device to retrive the logs? I have 2 WiFi USB dongles here.


(3) Dont know if its important, but I have a yellow dot sticker at the RJ45 Ethernet jack. Anyone else does have this too? :?

3: The yellow dot means you have a unit with fixed CEC circuit.

1: if you connect the card to a Linux pc and mount it, you will have a /mnt/sdcard0/(or wherever your distribution on the host mounted the sdcard)/logs/dmesg
This file should contain the requested info. Alternatively maybe the syslog file.

2: yes this is possible. If a compatible driver is available and you only have the console, check http://askubuntu.com/questions/464507/u ... 2-personal for instructions. In case you don't use wpa2 with PSK, the instructions will be similar.

Regarding number 2, the driver of the dongle is responsible on how the interface is named. Ralink dongles often carry the name ra0 for example.
You get the information, with a bit of luck, with iwconfig.

Regarding number one, are you sure that image is for the C1? I'm a bit confused by the line:

Ok, I bought an HDMI cable and tried again. The first time it gave me an very strange error and the boot freezed on screen. It said something like:

So I powered it off. And plugged in again the power and then it booted straight to the login promt. *BOOM* :mrgreen: I hit in the odroid:odroid credentials and saw the wallpaper. Then I took the Ethernet cable and plugged it in. 2 seconds and it said - connection established. I will try to gather more information on the first error and freeze at boot and post them if possible.
