VU7 Series Case and Bracket

Post by hominoid »

This case shell is for a VU7 or VU7+. I’m currently working to include the VU7a+ in the near future. The design includes a 100mm vesa mount on the back and a bracket with features for various uses.

      Features:
      --Minimalist design.
      --Freestanding or Cloudshell2 attachment.
      --No modification to Cloudshell2 needed.
      --Billboard and angled display.
--Bracket folds flat for detached remote use.
--Decreased angle of view when freestanding.
--Quick easy tool-less attachment and removal.
--Strong, stiff and durable with no-flex during touchscreen use.

The use a HDMI right angle adapter and a case slot in the Cloudshell2 provides basic cable control for both angled and billboard viewing. The small gap were the top of the bracket hangs on the edge of the CloudShell is normal. You can see it in the photo on the left. I placed fillets inside of the opening to disperse the stress at the corners so it can’t go all the way down and doesn’t need to, don’t force it.

The angle is reduced when using it freestanding for better up close viewing.

          M3 x 18mm screws, qty 6

          VU7 Bracket BOM
          M3 nuts, qty 4
          M3 x 12mm screws, qty 8

          Build Notes:
The pieces in the stl file are oriented so that stress vectors are perpendicular to the layers for added strength so be aware if you rearrange the platter for printing. Pay attention to the vesa mounting screw length so it doesn’t touch the Vu7 pcb. The nut traps are slightly small by design and meant to be inserted hot so they stay in place. If you have not done this before here is how. Stick a longer screw through the hole and turn the M3 nut on to it. Holding the screw with pliers, heat the nut up with a lighter or small butane torch and pull it into the hole in one movement. Try to pull the nuts all the way to the bottom of the hole. Make sure to align the points of the nut with the points in the nut hole before you insert it.

Any chances you want to design a double din enclosure? Lol I've been playing around with face plates but still need more work on the hdmi and switch hole aside from just widening it and enclosing the whole thing with external switch elsewhere.

I have a vu7a, but I don't have a precise measuring tool (would a school ruler work)? Let me know what you need to have measured. I'd like to get the case printed some day...

If you can measure to the millimeter it will. I got my Vu7+ and did this design right before they introduced the Vu7a+. If your willing and have the means to measure accurately let me know and I'll gather up the measurements I need. If I remember correctly it was the audio jack that didn't have dimensions and also some z-axis measurements I couldn't get from the HK 2d drawing.

            Edit:
Having worked with and around engineers for years, the problem is never the ruler, scale or other measuring tool. :D

I read prints all the time at work and it's common that there be trends in dimensions, I would bet that the 3.5 Jack is close to 7mm from the 58.01 dimension.

I agree and have also noticed dimensional "trends" on many different designs. I don't like to guess when I have no future means to verify the correctness and especially when others are going to be using the work.

I would agree to that. Few hundred microns can definitely effect fit.

Very cool, I will definitely put this on the list to print. Did you upload to thingiverse also?

No, not a member there. To many sites, not enough time and many of them I have a problem with their Terms and Conditions.

@hominid do these "measurements" help? I tried to photograph from above the measuring tape to minimize paralax error.

Added a bracket for the VU7, some pictures and updated the design files in the op.

Just an quick update to say I got to the buttons for the Vu7a and decided I really need one in hand to do them justice. I have a project I need one for anyway so I'll finish it up when it arrives.
