Non-Responsive New Odroid-XU4

Unread postby wdesponts » Fri Feb 17, 2017 11:10 pm

OK, I've now spent over 4 hours trying to get this little board started all to no avail. I need some help please!

I was able to have one successful boot, but after shutting it down via the command line to address a missing USB3 connected drive issue, the XU4 has not been willing to reboot. My rig consists of an Odroid-XU4 and the Odroid Cloudshell.

I was able to find the post about the USB3 connection problem and carefully cleaned the contacts as per the instructions. When I attempted to re-start the rig, it was non-responsive. I do get a red light indicating that the XU4 board is getting power, but nothing else happens. This led me to format and re-flash several images on three different SD cards multiple times to ensure that the problem is not with my activities. Here are the images I used:

  • ubuntu-16.04-mate-odroid-c1-20160727
  • omv_2.1.1_xu3_xu4
  • syncloud-odroid-xu3and4-17.01(First Boot Worked)
  • android-4.4.4-alpha-3.1-sd2emmc_installer-odroidxu3-20151006

To create these SD cards I followed the advice in the wiki and forms and used FAKEFLASH to test the cards and SDFomater to format them before flashing. I also used the odroid version of Win32DiskImage.

All attemps keep resulting in the same problem. The XU4 will not boot.

Can any one advise....is this a defective board?

The first image on your list has a "c1" in the name and is for the ODROID C1 not for the ODROID XU3/XU4. Make sure you download the correct images.

Make sure the boot select switch is set correctly to your boot medium (SD or eMMC).

Remove the hard drives and try again, sounds like a power issue.

1. Not for XU4
2. No experience with this OS.
3. Works
4. This file you flash to SD, boot with eMMC attached and it flashes the eMMC for you..so not going to work.

That is 2 out of 4 that definitely won't work.

I also use an XU4 in a CloudShell and can't recommend DietPi enough, it's based on Debian Jessie (meveric maintains a LOT of packages for this base) and has a super easy configuration and 'addon' system.

I hate to direct link to his files but to be certain you get the right file:

First, let me share my thanks for all the responses and advice, it helped.

Unfortunately, I think it only helped in determining that the board itself is the case of my problems not the SD Cards or Images. But in the interest of gettting this resolved, I've taken the time to report on all the steps I've undertaken to make this rig work.

SD Cards
  • Used 3 cards to test. I have two 16GB and one 32GB SSD card
  • All three cards are Class 10 Lexar cards
  • All three where tested using FAKEFLASHTEST and all passed
  • I reformatted the cards on my Virtual Linux Mint workstation
  • After using Mint to delete the partition and reformat , I reformatted yet again using the Win32SDFomatter software
  • I also tested using both quick and full formatting options

Images Used in Tests
  • omv_2.1.1_xu3_xu4.img
  • syncloud-odroid-xu3and4-17.01.img
  • DietPi_v141_OdroidXU4-armv7-(Jessie).img
  • ubuntu-16.04-minimal-odroid-xu3-20160706.img
  • android-LineageOS-14.1-alpha-0.4-sd_installer-odroidxu3-20170207.img

Imaging Tool and Process Used in Test
  • I downloaded the Odroid version version of Win32DiskImager (0.9.5)
  • I checked each download using the MD5 values
  • I tested each image on each card at least once...for one of the 16GB cards twice (using both a quick and full format)

Results
Well I was hoping that it was a PABKAC (Problem Exists Between Keyboard and Chair) but at this time I don't think so. No matter what the card does not boot (by the way the screen and USB hard drive where not plugged-in for any of the tests). I get a red led indicating that the power is getting to the board but not other activity. I also ensured that the selector switch was set to SD card as opposed to EMMC for boot. In addition to all that, in the event that it was a defective activity LED or that the fan was not working, left the system "on" for about 5 min to gauge if there was some activity that I was not able to notice. I am running this rig without a screen keyboard or mouse attached.

Lastly, to eliminate my stupidity from the equation, I reformatted on last time and loaded rasbianpi on each card. I then used each in my RaspberyPI and RaspberryPI1 boards and all worked flawlessly.

At this point I can't see the forest from the trees or the trees from the forest (I always get that one wrong), so any help is appreciated.

Thanking you in advance

William

I think you already did as much as you could.
Your XU4 seems to be defective or damaged by unknown root cause.
Please contact "odroid at hardkernel dot com" with a link of this thread.
She will help your RMA process if you purchased the board from us directly.
Otherwise, contact your local distributor. Sorry for the inconvenience caused.
