Wi-Fi and Access Point

Unread postby rjam » Thu Dec 15, 2016 7:41 pm

Hello,

I want to create a Wi-Fi hotspot to set up an intra-net using hostapd and for that I am looking for a Wi-Fi dongle that supports the AP mode? If anyone has any suggestions please let me know.

Thank you.

In theory all HK wifi dongles should support AP mode. I tried with Module 3 a year ago and it worked, but was unstable (I couldn't authenticate after a while). Maybe someone who's actively using an ap can recommend something specific

We tested the Soft-AP function with WiFi module 0,3 and 4 on XU4.

I am using an XU3 and the link you shared states at the top: "This application note is applicable to the C1/XU4/C2 Ubuntu/Linux Platforms." Furthermore I cannot find any user manual or product specifications of the WiFi modules. The website merely mentions a few details hoowever, I am looking for details about its range and temperature tolerance too.

This is the link I checked for WiFi module 4 info: http://www.hardkernel.com/main/products ... 1630348024

Thank you

XU4 and XU3 are sharing the same OS image/kernel.

All ODROID products are commercial grade at 0C - 45C temperature.
The RF range/distance can't be clearly described due to many different conditions.

What is your target distance?
You'll get twice the range at 2.4Ghz that you get at 5Ghz generally.
Some other users are using our WiFi module 3 with a replaced 4dBi or 5dBi antenna instead of the stock 2dB antenna for their remote robot or drone project.

Many of the WiFi dongles found for sale on various internet product sites use the RTL8188CUS chipset, which AFAIK does not support HOSTAP mode. I could be wrong. I have never been able to get it to work as AP. I think the very first (long antenna version) Hardkernel dongle used RTL8188CUS. Again - I could be wrong about that.

Some people have reported success with using RALINK chipsets like RT5390 and similar.

Also - WiFi adapters can use "adhoc" mode in place of "ap" mode, which would work for an intranet. The problem is that adhoc mode has NO security, so unless you're in a very isolated place it might not be a good idea.

As described in our WiKi, RTL8188CUS in our wifi module 3 supports the SoftAP mode well.

Try the instruction on Ubuntu 16.04 image. Do you really run 14.xx?

Our Android doesn't support the AP mode.

Check "lsusb" output on terminal.
You can find an entry something like this if the WiFi module 3 is detected on Ubuntu.
ID 0bda:8176 Realtek Semiconductor Corp. RTL8188CUS 802.11n WLAN Adapter

The RTL8153 is the on-board Gbit Ethernet controller on XU4.

Can you find "0bda:8176" from lsusb output when you plug our WiFi module 3?

I have no idea.
Our official WiFi modules should have "ODROID" logo printing on the plastic cases.

Please ask them what you ordered and what they shipped.

Hello Johnny,

It is currently not working on the Android OS.
This is an issue we found at the last moment and are working on it. Other OSs work. ie; Ubuntu.

Let you know when I hear anything else.

You aren't going to get a resolution for that dongle working on Android without compiling the driver against the kernel you are running.

You will definitely want to exchange it if possible.
