Thanks for the info.

When I asked about a week ago if heatsink, fan and PSU are included, they told me that they don't know

Hi all,
I just would like to know if the XU4 fan is managed by software or hardware ?
In another words, can we change the fan's program (to change statrting temperature for example) ?

Thanks, and sorry if this question has been already ask

software..
can be controlled from Kernel parameters or script... search in XU3 forum to find some FAN scripts.

I just received my ODROID-XU4 and CloudShell. I'm new to ODroid, but not to SBCs.

The Cloudshell did not arrive with any instructions on using the IR receiver or TFT display. Has anyone come across reference materials on how to interact with the display or IR Receiver?

Yes it is for the 3.10 kernel. But i'm hoping they can also get the graphics working on 4.12 kernel also. For the linux media tree drivers (to support directly-attached tv adapters).

Hey thanks for the quick answer.
LCD works now, great.
But the "Quick Setup" does not work for me. I can add the repositoy and do a "apt-get update", but then i can't install "odroid-cloudshell".
Reason is, it does not find the "odroid-lirc" package. Is that not existing for Ubuntu 15.04 (was on factory eMMC), or do i need another repository ?

Just buy a usb 2 audio device to go with it. Personally I'd rather not have the audio out as it makes the device slightly cheaper.

karlkloss wrote:

Captain Obvious, is this you?

The audio outputs of most TVs are of surprisingly low quality. Lots of noise that you don't notice when you use the inbuilt speakers, but will when you use an external amplifier. Also I don't want the TV running all the time when I'm just listening to music.
A decent HDMI Audio splitter costs nearly as much as the whole board.
And all this because you wanted to save the $2 for an audio codec or a S/P-DIF output.

You may say that the Odroid boards are just meant as development boards or a cheap PC surrogate, but then you ignore the fact that many of us already have PC monitors with just DVI and Displayport, but without any audio function. In this case, you can't play a game, watch a video, or hear music while programming, without additional hardware.
With the C1, I'm up to now not able to use an USB audio adapter without lots of crackling and popping, if it is working at all.
Will this be any better with the XU4?

Now that the XU4 is available at pollin.de in germany i consider to buy one.

Main purpose would be as a Homeserver/NAS now that price is down and i dont need Gbit-Ethernet adapter extra..

Question:
How is Kodi running from ubuntu as i could replace my Pi2 as Mediacenter at the TV?
A)Live TV from a tvheadend server?
B)24/25.... fps problems especially from ubuntu?
C)HDMI problems like the C1 has with some TV´s?

Thx guy, i hope its the right place as i didnt want to start a own thread just for that..

Thanks for the update about how to get the LCD to work.

Enabling/configureing the LCD works. I can now get information to the LCD when i unplug the HDMI cable. If the HDMI cable is connected, the LCD turns on - but without any info on it.

I can't get the rest to work though. I tried to follow the Quick setup and then the example program to show server information on the LCD. Nothings showing up on the LCD. I tried to downgrade Ubuntu 15.04 to 14.04. Still an empty LCD.

Some help would be appreciated, all i want is to get the example program to run. A'm I the only one struggling? or did anybody actually get it to run?

Please, help me to clarify some doubts. I'm a beginner in the embedded and I don't understand very well a lot of things.

I see that this kernel is experimental.

1. What is the difference with the kernel from the mainline. I'm referring to original. I'd downloaded it and compiled for XU3. There is a config inside. I see that dts/dtsi are different. In the original some components are missing. Why? The board is the same and I suppose with the same config file.

2. Why there is some issue on GPU,HDMI.... May be possible that old kernel works perfectly and new kernel doesn't work. Why?

3. I understand that using original kernel is not the right way. Why?

Sorry for my trivial question

The normal odroid 3.x Kernel has some additional patches (drivers) applied to it, which are not (yet) in the Kernel mainline. In Kernel 4.x mainline are some patches included, so less patches are needed.

There are efforts running to get more stuff on upstream.
But there are many Samsung code missing.

HMP patch's didn't even landed on upstream.

So efforts are here: https://github.com/hardkernel/linux/tre ... 4-v4.2-rc1

Hi all,

I am the owner of the first batch XU4.
XU4 is very noisy, the fan - definitely has a bad controller, it spins for few secs, stop for few secs, and again spins, and so on.., for all days long.
It's better to keep it spinning all the time rather than start-stop-start-.... just after few secs.
How can I do that? (keep the fan spinning all the time at some speed?)
Thank you

Too bad. The giant HDMI probably took too much room. I'll be glad when the giant HDMI connectors go away.

BTW, when will we get smaller ethernet connectors (not just for odroids, on all devices)? Of course I suspect this will happen when we get the moving sidewalks. ;)

Smaller Ethernet? Probably not in the next 10 years, more likely they get bigger... The new Cat6a cables are nearly as thick as a RJ45 plug, Cat7 even worse and not sure how Cat8 will look like.

Regarding this... If I had an application where the main UI was displayed on a TV connected via HDMI, would it be impossible to have a separate application (maybe just an animated logo or something) running on the LCD?

Also regarding the IR receiver, why would /dev/lirc0 not exist in certain OS's? In Debian (with the EXACT same configurations and settings as the default image with the quick setup for cloudshell) I only get /dev/lircd which doesn't work. On a custom busybox-based image I get /dev/lirc0 however with no settings, just by loading the kernel modules. Any ideas?

I assume that you want X on HDMI and another simple UI app on LCD, you can try simple Linux frambuffer based application. So that X will run on HDMI as is and another application will access the framebuffer for LCD, separated access from HDMI but it won't use Mali. For example, SDL for generic fb.

What's the kernel version running on your XU4? Could you show me the list loaded modules with lsmod?

Okay cool, that would be fine. If possible I'd prefer running something using GLES, I just tried a simple app with the mali-fbdev drivers but it forces the display to fb0, even if I use con2fbmap and change to run in fbcon from the LCD. Is there a way for get mali fbdev to run on fb1?

I'm running a custom-built kernel from the 3.10.y branch.I'll check the modules just now, not running that image at the moment. I'll also compare it with the default image's modules where the remote is working.

Sorry for the later answer, odroid: I am interested in XU3 because it has the power monitoring interface. Unfortunately it is gone in XU4.

I see CONFIG_IR_GPIOPLUG_CIR=m in the config config-3.10.82-46 in the default image. Using this config on the odroidxu3-3.10.y branch from http://github.com/hardkernel/linux.git doesn't build this module (among others included in that config). Is there a chance that there are some changes regarding the IR receiver that haven't been committed to that repo yet?

Also, I got /dev/lirc0 when using the kernel from http://deb.odroid.in/5422/pool/main/l/linux-source-3.10.82-46/linux-image-3.10.82-46_20150806_armhf.deb, but the remote still didn't pick up (even after installing lirc and all the quick setup packages). Perhaps Debian's default lirc package doesn't work the same way Ubuntu's does?

Lastly, any feedback re. the LCD from my last reply?

I've updated github with the correct patch's.

As for the LCD you can use the example for dual-head configuration on the wiki and show one application on each window.

I don't think so, all commits are already uploaded to Github.

Maybe this is the reason, check if LIRC service is running or try "service lirc restart". If it gives you an error, you could to replace "/etc/lirc/hardware.conf".
What's your Debian version or version of installed lirc package?
Lastly, any feedback re. the LCD from my last reply?

By the way, you should create your your thread to resolve your IR receiver problem. :)

As for the LCD you can use the example for dual-head configuration on the wiki and show one application on each window.

Awesome, thanks! I'll try both. Does this patch also include the fix for half the screen missing at 1280x... resolutions?

I tested everything and it's mostly working. VU displays properly at 1280x800, remote is working (had to dpkg-reconfigure lirc after changing config files, have to do this everytime I boot?).

I did this and it works, but I cannot run GLES content on this screen. I suspect that's either because of the controller, Xorg using the fbdev driver for that screen and armsoc not being supported there. Is there any way around this?

You're right, sorry about that... I'll make a new thread for the other things not discussed here.

No, currently there's no support for GLES on the 2.2" LCD of the CloudShell.

Hello,
I have problems with my Odroid XU4. I have the 16 Gb eMMC and i get only the red light. Never the blue one.
I've flashed the eMMC, and still is not working. I've checked the switch in the right position.
Some suggestion to my problem?
Best regards,
Pablo
