[Tutorial] Using a Kindle PW to SSH into an ODroid

Unread postby qkpham » Mon May 06, 2013 5:07 am

Hi everyone,

Today, I will show you how to use a Kindle Paperwhite as an SSH client (can be done with other Kindle devices but the method is different than the one depicted in this tutorial) This is very similar to the Kindleberry Pi hack except that I wanted to use it with my ODroid U2

The advantage of using the Kindle PW is that it's a very low power consumption device so it can last 2 months without needing to be charged 8-)

This tutorial is divided into 4 steps :

1) Jailbreaking the Kindle PW
2) Installing the Prerequisite bundles
3) Installing the launcher
4) Installing kterm with ssh support

NOTE : the jailbreak has been done on a Kindle Paperwhite under 5.3.5 firmware version. There is no guarantee that it will work on other upcoming firmwares. Also, this kind of hack is always risky in some way so I cannot be responsible if your device is bricked although chances are really low.

To make it simple, I have compiled all the files in a single zip file. You will just need to follow the steps in order.
DOWNLOAD : https://www.dropbox.com/s/8rmdbwcrq4l2xaj/KindlePW-ssh.zip

Extract it.

 1) Jailbreaking the Kindle PW (folder 1- JB)

-Plug you Kindle PW into your computer.
-Open your Kindle drive.
-Transfer jailbreak.mobi into documents folder
-Transfer jailbreak.sh & MOBI8_DEBUG into the root of your Kindle drive.
-On the home menu, open the new Paperwhite Jailbreak - Personal shortcut.
-Follow the on-screen instructions.

Your Kindle PW is now jailbroken !

 2) Installing the Prerequisite bundles (folder 2- Prerequisites)

Now we need to install the prerequisite bundles.
There are 2 files update_k5_ALL_PW_ALL_devcerts_install.bin & update_k5_ALL_PW_ALL_kindlet_jailbreak_install.bin

IMPORTANT : they have to be installed EACH at a time !

-Put update_k5_ALL_PW_ALL_devcerts_install.bin at the root of your Kindle drive.
-Eject/unmount your Kindle PW.
- Go to Settings > Settings > Update Your Kindle then confirm.
- Your Kindle PW will restart.

Repeat the same procedure with the other file..

-Put update_k5_ALL_PW_ALL_kindlet_jailbreak_install.bin at the root of your Kindle drive.
-Eject/unmount your Kindle PW.
- Go to Settings > Settings > Update Your Kindle then confirm.
- Your Kindle PW will restart.

 3) Installing the KUAL launcher (folder 3 - Launcher)

-Put the KindleLauncher-2.0.azw2 file into the documents folder on your Kindle drive.

 4) Installing kterm with ssh support (folder 4 - kterm with ssh)

- Drag the kterm folder into the extensions folder on your Kindle drive

Open the Launcher on your Kindle > kterm

Type ssh root@xxx.xxx.x.x (where xxx.xxx.x.x is your local ODroid IP of course)

Type your password and you are good to go :D
